Transgender Marriage
Help 4 Families affirms all the points made in the Kansas City Declaration on Marriage, but especially emphasizes this statement made within that declaration:
Marriage creates one unity out of the two corresponding genders (Gen. 2:23-24; Matt. 19:4-6; Mark 10:6-9; 1 Cor. 6:16; Eph. 5:22-33).
Help 4 Families’ Position Is That God Declared Marriage to be Between One Man and One Woman.
In answer to a question about marriage, Jesus said, “’Haven’t you read … that at the beginning the Creator “made them male and female,” and said, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh”? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate’” (Matthew 19:4-6).
God created each person to be either male or female (Genesis 1:27). Human attempts to alter God’s creation of an individual’s gender are an affront to God and His infinite wisdom (Job 38:1-4; Isaiah 45:9-12; 55:8-9; Romans 9:20). Sex-reassignment surgery might change one’s gender in the eyes of the prevailing culture, but in the greater divine reality the change is merely cosmetic. Consequently, marriage of two (or more) people born into the same gender, even if one of the two has had sex-reassignment surgery, does not fit within the boundaries God aligned for marriage.
Help 4 Families’ Position Is That Truth Must Be At the Foundation of Any Marriage.
A person who attempts to take on the appearance and traits of the opposite sex—even with the extreme measure of sex-reassignment surgery—is denying the truth of their God-assigned gender. A marriage built on a foundation that denies the truth is doomed to failure (Luke 20:21; John 8:32; Romans 1:18; 2 Timothy 2:25). While this is true about any relationship built on deception, its certainty in transgender marriage is obvious.
Help 4 Families’ position is that a person who identifies as transgender and marries someone of the same birth sex is not in a valid marriage. In the greater divine (and biological) reality the change is merely cosmetic.
